I feel very lucky to have so many things to be thankful for!
One thing I am particularly appreciative of was outlined beautifully in a piece the by opinion columnist Kathleen Parker. Win or lose, democracy stands was printed in the Sunday Orlando Sentinal right after the November election.
I really loved how she said "On Election Day, no one had to step over a pool of blood to get to the polls; no one had to risk a sniper's bullet or an improvised explosive device to cast a ballot. And no one had to worry that sore losers might drag "traitors" from their cars for preferring a different approach to governance."
It really is something we should ALL be thankful for -shortly after reading this piece I heard a story on NPR about the fighting in Congo and it really drove it home for me Peacekeeper Jumps to Aid in Kinshasa Gun Fight and it is truely a statement that we can dislike what our leaders are doing, replace to those leaders, and no one is picking up arms to kill there neighbor about it.
Pretty powerful - now if we could just spread it around - if we could just show those picking up arms that their world would really BE better if they didn't. If they would be peaceful in their protest and the leaders would be gracious and not fix elections. If everyone realized (including our own Prez) that most powerful thing a leader can do is to promote peaceful solutions. Working together always trumps shooting each other.
Now that would be something extra to be giving thanks for!
